Everybody thinks that Rachel and Matt broke up cos she hadn't come back to England, but it's not true. This is what really happened:
FLORIDA PARADISE HOTEL
GIRLS ROOM
7 AM
The alarm clock rang. Rachel stretched lethargically as she cracked out the kinks in her stiff back. Then she got up and went to the bathroom. She was going to take a bath, as per usual, when she started to feel sick again. After that she crouched over the toilet and threw up her non-existent breakfast. Hannah woke up worried. She went to the bathroom door and knocked it softly. It was already open so she opened it at all and entered to the bathroom. Rachel was there.
- What's going on, Rach? - asked Hannah a bit sleepy. She looked at her friend. Rachel was down on her knees in front of the toilet. - Oh, no! You're sick again! This is the third week you're like that! - she added later.
- Fourth. - corrected Rachel. She fell over the toilet once again. Tina and Jo got up faster after hearing Rachel throwing up. They went to the bathroom door.
- What's up? - asked Jo yawning and stretching.
- Rachel's sick again. - answered Hannah putting her hand on Rachel's back. She was still throwing up.
- Again?! It's been 4 weeks since she's like that! - said Tina surprised. Then she turned to Rachel and said: - You have to see a doctor, Rach. -
- I know that. - answered Rachel standing up and walking over to the sink. - And my period is non-existent since... three weeks ago. - she added brushing her teeth. Hannah set a glass down on the sink ledge. Rachel nodded her thanks.
- Three weeks?! That's not OK, Rach. Something's happening to you. - said Tina giving Rachel a towel. She smiled Tina thanks and went out of the bathroom. Then she took a pink T-shirt and her jeans and dressed up. After that she took her purse and went out of the room.
- Where are you going?! We have to work in an hour. - said Hannah.
- Yeah. Howard will be so mad with you if you're not here in time. - added Jo taking her white T-shirt and her black trousers.
- I have to buy something. Don't worry, I'll be right back. - answered Rachel, and went down the hotel.
FLORIDA PARADISE HOTEL
GARDEN-GIRLS ROOM
7.25 AM
She went back to the hotel with a small bag in her hand. When she was going to the girls' room she met Bradley. She was surprised to see Brad awake so early.
- Where were you? - asked Bradley still asleep.
- I had to buy something. Bye Brad! - answered Rachel.
She went straight to the girls room and locked herself in the loo. After some minutes she went out of it with a stick in her right hand and a box in the left one. She was crying. Hannah, Jo and Tina went closer to her. Rachel put the box and the stick on the bedside table and hugged Jo. Tina took the stick and the box and said loudly:
- Rachel... are you... pregnant? -
Rachel stepped back and nodded. Tina hugged her. Hannah took the stick and said:
- It can't be possible. You haven't had sex in two months! -
- Well, it's not true actually. I kinda had it about a month ago or so. - said Rachel and blushed.
- What?! - asked the girls surprised.
- Yeah. It's true. Remember when Matt came to visit me? - asked Rachel drying her eyes with her hands.
Tina, Hannah and Jo nodded.
- Well, I had dinner with him the night he arrived to Miami, and then we went to his room. He cuddled and kissed me during an hour or so, and then he made his move. - explained Rachel remembering the day. She was in her own memories now. - We did it all night long. He was so kind with me. It was so romantic! Then I woke up the next morning and looked at the roof. You know those stories some women have and they all say that, "I could tell in my belly that we'd created something that night,"... well, I guess that was the feeling I felt that morning. Then he woke up and took me in his arms and kissed me so sweet that I totally forgot about that feeling. - she added. She was still remembering that night.
- Until now. - said Tina.
- Did you use protection? - asked Jo seriously.
- Huh? - asked Rachel getting out of her trance.
- I asked you if you used protection that night. - asked Jo again.
- Oh, well... I think not. I think we were so caught up in the moment that we forgot about it. - answered Rachel blushing more than before.
- So you can be pregnant easily. - answered Jo sarcastically.
Rachel answered: - I think so. - Then she thought a while and realised what Jo had just said. - Oh, God! You're right!! What did I do that night? - she exclaimed laying down on her bed and crying.
- A baby. - answered Hannah with a little smile. The other girls glanced at her. Hannah blushed. Rachel was about to cover her face with her hands, but Tina adverted her:
- Wash your hands, Rach. You're going to have a pee infection in your eyes if you don't do that. -
Rachel went to the bathroom and washed her hands. Then she sat down on her bed. Jo washed her hands too and then Hannah went to the bathroom.
- What are you gonna do, now? - asked Tina rubbing Rachel's back.
- I don't know. I mean, it wasn't in my plans to get pregnant. - she sighed. - I don't know. I have no idea... - said Rachel, and started to cry again. Jo and Tina hugged her comfortingly.
- Are you gonna tell Matt? - asked Hannah from the bathroom. She was still part of the conversation.
Rachel dried her eyes with her clean hands.
- I have to. He has to know. - she answered.
- When are you gonna tell him the notice? - asked Tina.
- I don't know yet. Maybe when I call him today or when he calls me. It's just... I... I have to think about it. - said Rachel. She stood up and left the room. The girls kept looking at her. They were worried.
- What are we gonna do? This will change our lives forever! - said Tina when Rachel closed the door and she was out of the room.
- I don't know, Teen, but not only our lives will change. Rachel's life will change more than anyone's. - answered Jo looking at her friend. Hannah left the bathroom and then Jo entered.
FLORIDA PARADISE HOTEL
SOLARIUM
8 AM
Rachel was sitting on the table. She had her breakfast on it (toasts, tea and salt pork) but she hadn't eaten it. She wanted to think about her situation first... She was pregnant... Yeah. PREGNANT. That word was all over her mind. She couldn't forget that word. It was stuck there. And then she had so many questions next to the word: What will she say to Matt when she phones him? Will he understand? Will he help her with the baby? She didn't know what to do. She thought about having an abortion, but then she thought about the consequences. She felt so good with the notice and she could feel life growing inside her. She really didn't want to do it.
In that moment, Paul came to the table with his breakfast.
- Hey, Rachel! What's up? - asked Paul eating his salt pork.
- Nothing major, Paul. Don't worry. - lied Rachel looking to the pool. It was clean and the water was pure blue.
- C'mon, Rach! Tell me. - asked Paul.
- So sorry, I can't tell you. It's something personal. - answered Rachel. Then she thought a while and added with a little smile: - But you'll know it soon. Don't worry. -
- Alright, Rach. But you know I'm here for you if you need someone to talk to. - said Paul.
- Thanks, Paul. - greeted Rachel sweetly.
He kept eating. She still was seeing the pool when the rest of the band came to the table with their breakfasts. They sat down and started to chat. In that moment the postman came to the table rollerblading. He seemed really happy that day.
- Hey there! I have letters for you, guys! - he said.
- Really?! - S Club asked.
- Yeah. - answered the postman and pulled out eight white envelopes from his bag. He gave them their letters as he was saying: - Here's one for Jo, and here's one for Jon, one for Hannah, and one for Tina. Here's one for Paul, and one for Bradley too! And here are two for Rachel. Have a nice day! - he added later. Then he left the place rollerblading.
- Who's your letter from? - Jo asked Tina.
- My mom. Yours? - said Tina looking at Jo's letter.
- My brother. What about you, Rach? - asked Jo looking at Rachel. She was reading one of her letters in silence. Then she turned to Jo and answered:
- One's from my mom, and the other one's from Matt. -
The girls got closer to Rachel, who was opening Matt's letter. She read it in silence and a little tear fell. Her cell phone rang in that moment and she answered it. It was Matt.
- Hi, honey! How are you? - asked Matt from England.
- I'm fine, babe. I'm OK. - lied Rachel. She wasn't really sure if she could tell him about her pregnancy.
- Did you receive my letter? - asked Matt excited.
- Yeah, I did. - answered Rachel looking at the letter. - Thanks, sweetheart. - She said.
- You're welcome. - answered Matt. - I can't wait to see you again. - he exclaimed.
- Me neither. - said Rachel sadly. - Listen, I have a problem. - she added then.
- Sure. Tell me. - asked Matt.
- Well, I have this friend who's pregnant and she asked me what I would do if I were her. She's scared to tell it to her boyfriend. So I wanna ask you, if I were pregnant, what would you do? - she asked. There was a long silence and then Matt said:
- Well, honey, to be quite honest, I'd probably be really shocked, but then I'd order you to have an abortion. -
- An abortion? - asked Rachel surprised.
- Yeah. We're not ready to have kids. Not yet. We're young. We wanna have fun. And I think I'd make you choose between me and the baby. And there I know you'd choose the right option. - answered Matt already knowing she was going to choose him.
- So you'd want me to have an abortion, even though you know it's risky for me? - asked Rachel icily.
- For God's sake, Rachel! It's not risky if you're on the 2nd-3rd week! I read about it! But we're still talking about your friend, aren't we? - said Matt.
- Yes. Sure. - answered Rachel. She looked at her stomach sadly. A tear fell.
They kept talking for about 15 minutes until Howard, the hotel manager, screamed from the pool's side:
- YOU KIDS, COME HERE NOW!!!! -
Rachel hung down the phone and ran immediately to him with her friends. After that Howard asigned them their chores: Hannah and Tina had to clean the swimming pool; Brad and Paul had to make the guests' beds; Jon had to attend the bar and Rachel and Jo had to be in the reception. They all had a long morning.
FLORIDA PARADISE HOTEL
RECEPTION
10.30 AM
- What are you gonna do about the baby, Rach? - asked Jo while they were all alone there. She'd listened to Rachel really carefully when she told her about the conversation with Matt. Rachel shrugged.
- I don't know. I haven't told him yet, not in a direct form, and I really need him here. - said Rachel sadly. A tall, blonde woman came to the table top and they had to stop conversating. Jo attended her and then Rachel attended another woman.
MIAMI BEACH
12.30 PM
The morning was over and it was lunch time. They went to the beach, as per usual, and grabbed a table. They were all wearing their beach suits; the girls wore their bikinis and the boys, their shorts.
- I'm hungry. - announced Paul sitting down at the table.
- Really?! - asked Hannah not really surprised about it.
- With Paul everything's possible. - said Tina laughing.
Everybody knew that Paul was always eating and they weren't surprised by his comment. They all sat down and ate. By that time everybody knew about Rachel's pregnancy. They were all talking about that, so it was really hard for Rachel to listen to them. They were discussing about abortions and all that kind of things.
- I know it can be really hurtful. - said Tina eating her salad.
- Yeah. I read about it. The mom can be in and out within 5 to 10 minutes. What the doctors do is place the mom under a local anaesthetic and, in effect vacuum out the uterine lining and the virtually microscopic zygote. There is very little risk to the mother. However, if she does wait past the 12-week mark, it can become risky. At that point the doctors would perform a D&C, which would entail a general anaesthetic and... - said Paul. Rachel couldn't resist more.
- Please, stop. I don't want to listen to the rest! I can't resist more! - said Rachel covering her face with her hands and crying. Jo and Tina put their arms around Rachel trying to comfort her. The lunch continued in silence. After that the boys walked along the beach looking for women and the girls lay on the sand. They were all having a good time chatting, until Jo formulated that question she had had in mind for a while.
- Rach. - called Jo sitting down in her towel.
- Yeah? - asked Rachel still lying down.
- I was wondering... how pregnant are you? - asked Jo.
Rachel sat down, looked down at her stomach and studied the place where the foetus was. She smoothed a hand over her belly.
- Not much, I think. - she answered running a hand over her tummy again. - Maybe 3 weeks? A month? Somewhere around there. I have no idea. I seriously doubt anywhere past 7 weeks. - she added later. She laid down again and put her hands on her belly. She kept in that possition. Jo laid down as well. Rachel looked at her curiously.
- Why? - she asked then.
- Just to know. I mean, you have to know where are you to do the right thing with... it. - said Jo pointing Rachel's stomach. Jo didn't like the idea of Rachel being pregnant. She was in that situation when she was a lot younger and she knew it was so hurtful for her. Rachel sighed.
- I know that. Anyway I'm going to see the doctor tomorrow. I wanna know if I'm actually pregnant. You know sometimes those things don't work. - said Rachel she closed her eyes slowly.
- And if you are? - asked Tina.
- What are you gonna do? - Hannah asked.
Rachel opened her eyes and kept in silence. Then she sighed and said: - I have no idea, but I'm sure I don't want to have an abortion. - answered Rachel with determination. She closed her eyes again and they didn't talk about it anymore.
FLORIDA PARADISE HOTEL
GIRLS ROOM
6.45 PM
S Club was preparing their show for that night. They were going to sing again.
- I say we have to sing "S Club Party". It's more for today. Paaaaartyyy! - said Bradley dancing around the room. Tina shook her head.
- No. I think it's Rachel's turn to sing now. Her song is perfect for today. Slow, sweet, calm. Wanna sing, Rach? - asked Tina. Obviously Rachel wasn't taking part of the conversation. She was in her own world, thinking about her own life.
- Rachel!! - Jo screamed.
- What? - Rachel startled.
- We asked you if you wanna sing your song tonight. - said Jon fed up. Rachel looked at all of them. They were all really serious. She sighed and then said a bit discouraged:
- Sure. No problem. -
The night came and the band was ready. They went to the stage and Rachel sang "I Really Miss You" better than the first time. After the song was finished she felt so sad that when she went to bed and everybody was sleeping, she cried all night long. She really missed her home and her family, and of course, she missed her boyfriend. She wished all her family were there with her, but that couldn't be possible. She also wished Matt were there with her, but she knew that also couldn't be possible. God! She really wished that! She missed him so much and she needed him a lot, especially at this moment. Then she thought about the baby. She thought about her options. She had a few of them actually. She didn't want an abortion. It was too risky, and she didn't want to give it up for adoption cos she knew it would be so hurtful for her. She was going to have it inside her during 9 months so she was going to love it so much after that. She knew she wasn't prepared to leave it with other people after all that.
- Don't worry, honey. We'll be OK. - She whispered sweetly to the baby, looking at her stomach. A tear fell. She smiled. She stroked a hand over her stomach and fell asleep.
The next morning she woke up and, as per usual, she felt sick.
FLORIDA GENERAL HOSPITAL
DR. LOUIS CREED'S OFFICE. 3RD FLOOR
9.30 AM
- Well, Miss Stevens. There are no doubts: You're going to have a baby. Congratulations! - said the doctor. He smiled widely at her and flipped over a paper in her file, scribbling a note. Rachel shifted uncomfortably in her seat. She seemed upset.
- Are you OK, Miss Stevens? - asked the doctor. She looked at him.
- Yes. Sure. I mean... No. Not really. - answered Rachel covering her brown eyes with her left hand.
- Why not? I mean, it's always great news to have a baby. - asked the doctor curiously.
- I know but... well, um... it's just that... I haven't talked to the baby's father about it yet. He's in England now. And I'm a bit scared of his reaction when I tell him. I don't really know what to do. I mean, I know my options quite well and I'm really sure I don't want to have an abortion. - answered Rachel.
He stared at her for a few moments.
- I see. Well so you choose to keep the child or are you going to give it up for adoption? - asked the doctor.
Rachel winced slightly and gripped the armrest nervously.
- I think... I'm going to keep it. - said Rachel nervously.
He smiled, opened a desk drawer and pulled out a few pamphlets. He handed them over to her. She looked through them. There were various issues dealing with the pregnancy like "You're Going to Have a Baby!" and "The Miracle of Birth". She stood up slowly, feeling somewhat overwhelmed by the choice she made.
- Just to know... how far along am I? - asked Rachel who was next to the door.
- It's hard to say at this point, with the limited tests we've run, but a guess it would be around the 3rd to 4th week. Sounds OK? - answered the doctor. She nodded and smiled at him gratefully. - Remember we have the next appointment in two weeks. Same time. - he added.
- Don't worry, Dr. Creed. I'll be here. Thank you so much for everything. - said Rachel.
- You're welcome. - he answered. - Good luck, Miss Stevens. - he added.
She shut the door quietly behind her. She left the office with the pamphlets in her hand. She read over one on her way to the hotel. She knew she had done the right thing.

When she got to the hotel Tina, Jo and Hannah were sitting at a table drinking some juice.
- So? - asked Hannah excited.
- So what? - asked Rachel.
- What did the doctor say? - asked Hannah more excited.
- I'm pregnant. - announced Rachel putting a hand on her stomach.
- And what are you gonna do? - asked Tina worried.
- Well, I decided to continue with the pregnancy. I don't want to have an abortion. I know the consequences. And I think I'm not really prepared to give it up for adoption. And I'm feeling so good with it! I know something's growing up right here and I'm just excited about it. I wanna have the baby. - Rachel answered smiling.
- Are you really sure? This will change your life forever, Rach. - said Jo.
- I know, Jo. And I'm quite sure of my decision. I want the baby. - answered Rachel.
- So how pregnant are you, Rach? - asked Hannah curiously.
- About 3 or 4 weeks. It's quite small, but I can't wait for it to grow up and see it! - answered Rachel excited about the whole thing. After all she decided to become a mom.
- How will you tell it to Matt? - asked Jo.
- I don't know. But I know my decision's firm. - answered Rachel.
- Do you mean you're going to break up with Matt? - asked Hannah surprised. Rachel ran a hand through her hair, an air of melancholy settling over her features.
- No! I'm not breaking up with him. It's just... I wanna have the baby, and I'm going to have it whether he likes it or not. - answered Rachel with determination. She stood up and went to her room. When she got there, she laid on her bed and fell asleep.
FLORIDA PARADISE HOTEL
GIRLS ROOM
12.30 PM
Rachel was in a really bright room. There was a little white cradle and a rocking chair near it. Rachel was walking around the room with the baby in her arms. When she was going to look at her baby's face she heard that a familiar voice was calling her. Rachel looked at a light...
Hannah shook Rachel gently. Rachel was totally asleep, but she could feel Hannah's hands on her shoulders.
- Rachel! Rachel! Rachel! - said Hannah still shaking her. Rachel woke up startled.
- What? - she asked a bit asleep.
- It's lunch time. You fell asleep. - said Hannah. - Are you OK? - she asked then.
Rachel got up and went to the bathroom to wash her face. After dosing herself with cold water, she walked over to Hannah.
- Yeah. I'm OK, I think. - answered Rachel slowly.
- You seem upset. - said Hannah later.
Rachel didn't answer. Her cell phone rang in that moment and she had to answer. It was her boyfriend.
- Hi, honey! How are you? - he asked happily.
Rachel didn't answer for a moment. She didn't know what to say. She couldn't make a sound. She was shaking as a leaf and her eyes were full of tears. She sighed and said:
- I'm OK. I just... need to talk to you. It's important. -
Hannah was about to go out of the room, but Rachel reached out her hand and took Hannah's hand. She was nearly crying. Hannah sat down on Rachel's bed and put an arm around her.
- What is it? Are you OK? - asked Matt worried. Rachel sighed. She took courage and started:
- I... I... I'm not OK, Matt. I'm... - Then she stopped. She couldn't pronounce that word. She knew what was going to happen if she said that. She knew something hurtful was going to happen to her after that.
- You're what? Ill? - asked Matt. Rachel said nothing. He growled deep in his throat. - Answer me! What the hell is going on!? - he screamed.
- I'm... pregnant. - said Rachel softly. Pronouncing every word was like a weight falling off her shoulders. She let out a sigh. There was a long silence that, for Rachel, seemed endless.
Matt asked: - What?!! How... how... how did it happen? -
Rachel didn't answer.
- Well, then, who's is it? - he asked then. He sounded really angry.
Rachel took aback. She didn't expect that question. She had no doubts about who the father was, but Matt had doubts. Rachel was even more upset by his question. She was so shocked that she could barely utter one word:
- Yours. -
Matt was in silence. He didn't expect that answer. Well, not in that moment. He surely wanted to get married to Rachel, and surely he wanted to have kids with her, but not yet. Not now. It was too soon for him, for them. Rachel started to cry. She was relieved, but too upset. He let out a hard sigh.
- How pregnant are you? - asked Matt angrily.
- Only 4 weeks. - she answered and gulped.
There was a silence. Then Matt let out a relieved sigh and said:
- Well, you're still on time. -
- On time for what? - asked Rachel confused.
- To have an abortion! You don't want to have a baby now, do you? I mean, it's not the time yet. We're not ready for a baby. You know, this is so stupid! - he said icily.
Rachel felt as if someone had punched her in the stomach.
- I'm not going to have an abortion, Matt. - she said seriously.
- What?! You... you... Do you love me, Rachel? - asked Matt angrily.
- Course I do, but I want the baby as well. I love it too. - said Rachel still crying. Hannah was still hugging her.
- In that case, I don't want to take part of this. And if you're not going to put me first, I don't want to see you again. - answered Matt icily.
- Are... are you over me? - asked Rachel sadly.
- You perfectly know what I'm doing! Bye Rachel! - he said and hung down the phone. Hannah hugged Rachel tight. She was crying really, really hard.
In that moment Tina and Jo entered to the room.
- What happened? - asked Tina worried.
- Matt chucked her. He doesn't want to know about Rachel or the baby anymore. - answered Hannah. Rachel was still crying.
- Oh, God! What is she going to do? - asked Tina more worried.
Rachel upped her head to Tina and said, without stopping her crying:
- I'm still going to have my baby. -
They all hugged her and stayed there. Rachel kept crying.
TWO WEEKS LATER...
FLORIDA GENERAL HOSPITAL

Rachel was laid down on a stretcher in front of a little monitor. Jo, Tina and Hannah were around her. The doctor turned on the monitor. A white figure appeared. It had the shape of a little baby.
- Here is your baby. - said the doctor pointing the monitor. Rachel had tears in her eyes. Jo, Tina and Hannah looked at the baby fascinated.
- It's so... amusing! - said Hannah.
- It is. - answered Rachel fascinated. Then she looked at her friends. She smiled. They smiled her back.
Jo let out a relieved sigh and said: - Rach, I want you to know that we'll all be there for you always. And we'll help you with the baby. I know it'll be hard sometimes, but it'll also be beautiful. -
- Yeah. It'll be so wonderful to have a small child who'll try to dance along with us and who will run through the house laughing. - added Hannah smiling. Rachel smiled at them.
- You're right. - she said. - Thanks, girls! - she greeted then. She asked the doctor for two copies of the baby's pic. Then the girls left the hospital.

2.30 AM
Rachel got up slowly, took a little bag and went to the bathroom. She closed the door, sat down on the toilet, pulled out a paper and a pen from the bag and wrote:
"Dear Mom,
I'm fine here. I miss you a lot. I wish I were at home, just sitting on the sofa, drinking some tea and chatting with you. I miss that. I really need those chats right now, more than ever.
I know I told you about my pregnancy a while ago, but I just wanted to tell you the last things that happened. Don't worry, I'm fine. But there are quite a few things that I think you need to know. First of all I'll tell you that I'm going to go on with the pregnancy. Yeah! I thought a lot about it and I realised I'm ready to have it. After all, things happen for a reason! And I think I have to take this chance now. I really can feel life inside me!
The second thing I wanna tell you is that I broke up with Matt. Well, he broke up with me. That was cos he didn't want to have the baby. I think he was scared about the whole thing. And I don't blame him. In the beginning I was too scared and I didn't know what to do, but after today, things were clearer. Please don't talk to Matt. And tell Jason and Leigh not to talk to him. It'll be worse for me and the baby. He wanted me to have an abortion, but I refused. I want the baby! Of course I'm still a bit upset for my break-up with him, but I know things will be better soon.
Well, when I told you I was too scared but after today, things were clearer, that was cos today I saw my baby for the first time. Oh, God! It was so, so, SO amusing! It's really, really tiny and I can't feel its moves yet, but I know it's here and I'm so happy for that. Today I just felt like I was in the 7th Heaven! It was so emotional for me to see it. It's my baby! That was the moment where I felt so sure of my decision. I'm so looking forward to having the baby I can't explain it to you! But I know you know these feelings! You have four children!
Ooh! Guess what? I could hear its heartbeat too! It sounded so beautiful! I also have a picture of the baby. Well, I asked the doctor to give me two. One is for you. I hope you like it. I love it to pieces! It seems so tiny!
I'll become a single mom, but you know what? I'm really happy for that. It'll be just me and my baby and everything's going to be fine. I know it. Don't worry about me and the child. We'll be OK. The band's going to help me with everything, and I'm sure I'll be back home soon. I really want to.
Tell dad not to be mad with me. Tell him I'm sure I know what I'm doing. Tell him I really miss him and that I love him a lot!
Please, tell Jason and Leigh to feed my cats. I miss you a lot. I'll call you soon.
Don't worry, mom, I'm prepared for everything. I learned from you. We'll be OK.
Tons of love,
Rachel"
